Glaucoma, commonly referred to as “eye pressure,” is a progressive eye disease that damages the optic nerve due to increased intraocular pressure. The most alarming aspect of glaucoma is that it often progresses silently — without symptoms — until significant vision loss has occurred.
What Are the Symptoms?
In most cases, glaucoma develops without any noticeable signs. However, in some individuals, the following symptoms may occur:
• Gradual narrowing of peripheral vision
• Headaches or a feeling of pressure around the eyes
• Seeing halos around lights
• Sudden vision loss (in acute glaucoma)
Who Is at Risk?
• People over 40
• Those with a family history of glaucoma
• Individuals with diabetes, hypertension, or migraines
• Long-term steroid users
• People with high myopia or hyperopia
Why Is Early Detection Crucial?
Vision loss from glaucoma is irreversible. However, when diagnosed early, its progression can be slowed or halted through medication, laser therapy, or surgery. Regular eye exams that include intraocular pressure measurements and optic nerve evaluations are essential for early diagnosis.
