What is Glaucoma?
Glaucoma is a disease of the eye pressure. It is a serious eye disease that can lead to blindness if untreated.
A fluid is produced inside the eye to nourish it. This fluid passes through drainage channels and is expelled outside the eye. If there is a narrowing of these channels the fluid accumulates in the eye. Excess fluid causes the eye pressure to rise. The optic cells, which cannot withstand this high pressure gradually die.
What is Normal Eye Pressure?
Normal eye pressure ranges from 9 to 20 mmHg. Various tools are used to measure eye pressure. The air-puff method may sometimes lead to measures errors, while the Applanation Method is considered more reliable.
Types of Glaucoma
Open - Angle Glaucoma: This is the most common type. In this form, the eye pressure is slightly higher than normal. Diagnosis is often delayed.
Closed - Angel Glaucoma: A rare form. The eye pressure suddenly rises to a very high level, causing severe headache and eye pain
